MID CAROLINA SOCCER CLUB

Group Training Program / Off Season Training

Reason #1.  Technical Skill Improvement

Free play promotes creativity on the field. Without the added stress of coaches and parental demands, game   preparation activities and other in-season stressors, players can relax, breathe easily and kick the ball around in an   unstructured environment.  From learning new juggling tricks to practicing different spins on shots to trying moves of   their favorite famous soccer player, youth soccer players should be encouraged to try new moves and push their   creative limits.

Reason #2.  Enhance Movement Off the Ball

The essence of free play soccer is that it is not structured and it is not coached.  The success of the game is that    players must answer questions on the field themselves.  This requires players to communicate, direct and support    one another during the flow of the match.  Most free play games are small-sided, 3 v 3, 4 v 4 or 5 v 5 in small areas–   30 yards by 20 yards, in an 18 yard box or something similar.  Players must move off the ball to support their   teammates and speak clearly to communicate their offensive and defensive needs in small areas because the   pressure is intensified due to the small environment.

                                         Reason #3.  Confidence Building

The key ingredient to any player’s success is their confidence level.  More confident (and skilled) players do better– they execute defense more consistently, they finish their shots at a higher percentage, their tackles are more convincing and their touches are more precise. Free play soccer naturally promotes confidence in the player   because the amount of touches and episodes of engagement are exponentially higher than a traditional match. The amount of touches a player experiences in an 11 v 11 match are much less than the amount in a small sided game– this is just the reality of both games. Thus, a player has limited opportunities to work on their game in a traditional soccer match. Off-season small-sided free play youth soccer is an excellent training module for players to dramatically improve their confidence level–smaller team numbers plus a smaller space equal a great amount of touches for the individual player. Teammates also learn the strengths and weaknesses of their teammates without the coach’s direction. This is another key element of the off-season training and vital to the team’s ongoing success. Increasing the amount of touches in small-size field plus players moving off the ball times teammates learning each other’s capabilities equals a successful equation that most teams must incorporate to their training regimen.
